Chapter 17: The Costlier Thing

Alexander Easterling watched the townhouse door from the car with his hands clamped on the wheel.

She had told him to wait, and for five years he had done what she told him.

Then a black sedan pulled up across the street, and Brooks Farwell got out of it.

Alexander was out of the car before the door had finished closing.

He crossed the street at a run, and reached the front step in time to hear Delaney screaming that she had the recordings.

He heard Brooks's voice cut through hers, low and flat.

"Offering what?"

Alexander went in.

The photographer was against the wall with his camera pointed at the middle of the room.

Marguerite sat on the stairs, gray in the face.

Delaney was on her knees on the rug.

And Brooks had Cora by both shoulders, pinned against the arm of the sofa, with his face a hand's breadth from hers.

"You planned this," Brooks was saying. "You and your little trustee. You set me up."

"Let go of me," Cora said.

Her voice was cool.

Alexander saw her hands, though.

They were shaking at her sides.

Something in his chest that he had kept shut for five years came open.

He did not decide to move.

He crossed the room, took Brooks by the collar of his coat and the belt of his trousers, and put him against the wall so hard that a picture frame came down.

Brooks's head cracked on the plaster.

Alexander's right fist was already drawn back.

It would have been so easy.

He had imagined it for five years, in the dark, in the car, on every first Friday when he watched her leave his office to go back to that house.
