Chapter 20: Read It Twice
The courtroom was full by nine on Friday.
Reporters filled the back rows, and the women from the parish luncheon sat together on the left side, eleven of them in their church hats.
The pastor's wife had saved Cora a seat on the aisle.
Cora took the table at the front with Alexander behind her in the gallery, no longer her trustee, only a man in a dark suit who had come to watch.
At the other table Brooks sat alone.
He wore a suit that no longer fit him, and he had no lawyer.
The judge was the same one who had struck the forged page.
She came in, sat, and looked over her glasses at the room.
"Before we begin," she said, "the court has a doctor's letter on file, dated Monday. It says that Mrs. Farwell suffered a psychological collapse and should not be trusted with her own affairs."
Brooks stood.
"Your Honor, I withdraw..."
"Sit down, Mr. Farwell. I didn't ask you."
He sat.
"Is the doctor who signed it in the room?" the judge said to the clerk.
A thin man in a gray coat rose from the third row with his hands twisted together.
"Doctor, you wrote this letter."
"I did, Your Honor."
"On what date did you examine Mrs. Farwell?"
The man looked at the floor.
"I didn't."
"I'm sorry?"
"I never met her. I wrote it from a hospital file that Mr. Farwell provided." He swallowed. "He paid me five thousand dollars."
A sound ran through the gallery, low and ugly.
"Five thousand," the judge said. "To sign your name to a diagnosis of a woman you had never seen."
"Yes, Your Honor."
