Chapter 5: The Oldest Email

Alexander did not want her to plug the flash drive in.

"It came from Delaney Rayburn," he said, standing over the desk in his study with his arms folded. "Three days ago she was on a stage in a diamond."

"I know," Cora said.

"She could have loaded anything onto it."

"Then I'll find out what, and I'll find out why."

She took a laptop from the shelf, an old one that had never touched Larkspur's network, and slid the drive in.

There were four hundred and six files.

Alexander pulled a chair up beside her and she shook her head.

"Don't help," she said. "It'll go faster if I only read."

She opened the first email and scrolled down it once.

Then she opened the next.

She did not stop to think.

Every page went into her head and stayed there, and the files went by on the screen one after another.

Alexander watched her face.

An hour went by before she stopped.

"Brooks to his mother, two years ago," she said, and her voice was flat. "I'll say it back to you so you hear it."

She spoke without looking at the screen.

"Mother, Delaney says the timing is right. We can move on the divorce after the Larkspur renewal. Cora will sign anything if I'm gentle. She always does."

Alexander's jaw tightened.

"Marguerite's reply," Cora went on. "Gentle, yes. But not too gentle. She mustn't think she has choices."

She scrolled down.

"A text thread, last spring. Brooks: She asked about a ring today. I told her the timing wasn't right. Marguerite: Good. Say it every time. It costs nothing."

Cora's hand lay very still on the keys.

"Every time," she said. "That was the whole plan. He said one sentence for five years, and it was a plan."
