Chapter 4: The Cake Box

Daphne came in carrying a white cake box tied with string, and the bell over the door rang behind her.

"Greta," she said. "Please. Five minutes."

Otis stepped out from behind the counter and stood between us.

"She can have five minutes if she buys something," he said. "Otherwise it's a closed shop."

"I'll buy something," Daphne said with a smile, and set the box on the counter. "This is already paid for."

I stayed on my stool.

My hand was flat on the notice from the lawyers, and I didn't hide it.

"Say it, then."

"I only wanted to say I'm sorry." Daphne's eyes were wet, and her voice was low and kind. "I never meant for you to find out that way. Holden wanted to tell you himself, on Friday, at home. I told him it was cruel to wait."

"You told him that."

"I did."

"Then it was your idea to do it in public."

"It wasn't public. It was lunch."

"Twelve people were at lunch, Daphne."

She let that go.

She opened the cake box and turned it toward me.

Inside was a square of tiramisu with a fork laid across it, the same one from table nine.

"You never got your dessert," she said. "You came in for something sweet."

I didn't look at the box.

I looked at her, at her smooth dark hair and her neat cream cardigan, and I remembered how she'd sat beside me at my baby shower and rubbed my back when I got dizzy.

"Why are you here?"

"To help." She took an envelope from her work bag and slid it next to the box. "Holden wants this to be easy. There's a cashier's check for two hundred thousand dollars in there, and the lease on a two-bedroom in Brooklyn, in your name. All you do is sign page nine."
