Chapter 10: The Safe One

Brennan's POV

I did not go home after Maple Court.

I drove to the office instead and sat in the empty parking structure with the engine off.

My mother had hung up on me. She had never hung up on me in thirty-four years.

I opened my phone and played the voicemail I kept at the bottom of the list, where I was sure nobody would ever find it.

It was fourteen months old.

"It's me," Lena said. "Pick up. I just wanted to ask if you'd eaten."

That was the day she found out about Bree. I had been at Bree's apartment, and I'd let it ring.

I had played it so many times that I knew where she breathed. I had never deleted it.

I went upstairs.

At eleven at night the floor was dark except for the cleaners at the far end. I sat at my own computer and opened the shared drive, because the question I couldn't stop asking was who wrote paragraph nine.

Bree had said she'd copied a template.

The file was called Corrigan PostNup Final.

I clicked the properties.

Author: bdanner. Created: August 19.

I read the date three times.

In August I hadn't said a word to anyone about marrying anybody. Lena was a waitress in a diner. I had been planning an engagement party for another woman.

Someone had been writing paragraph nine for three months before Hartwell was ever in the room.

I sat there until the cleaners left.

I did not call Bree. For the first time in two years, I did not want to tell her anything.

At two in the morning I let myself into my own house and found the kitchen light on.

Lena sat at the island in a robe with her hair loose and her hands around a mug.
