August VanDusen opened the letter from the Patent Office in the back of the car.
He did not trust himself to open it upstairs.
It was a Wednesday, ten days after the Met, and the thing had come by courier at nine.
It was two pages long, with a seal at the top.
He read the first paragraph, and then the second.

The Auchincloss claims had a line through them.
At the bottom of the second page, in a list of supporting exhibits, he found a short line.
*Exhibit 4: Sworn statement of A. VanDusen.*
He sat there in the leather quiet with the engine ticking.
His own name was on the page, at the very bottom, next to the word *supporting*.
For four years his name had hung on a wall in a frame, beside a stranger's win.
The driver glanced in the mirror, and glanced away.
August put the letter on his knee.
He put his hand over his eyes.
He had not cried at his father's funeral.
