Chapter 24: The Birth
The first contraction hit at two in the morning, in the middle of an argument about the crib.
Eliot put down the screwdriver and gripped the rail.
"Oh," he said.
August dropped the instruction sheet.
"Is that..."
"That's the one."
"It's three weeks early."
"Tell her."
They got to the car in nine minutes, which August would later say was the fastest he had ever moved a man in socks.
The private room at the clinic on Second Avenue was warm and dim, with a window that looked east.
The doctor who had told Eliot he was not barren stood at the foot of the bed in blue scrubs.
"Well, Mr. Standish," she said. "This is a better appointment than the last one."
"Don't make me laugh."
"Do laugh. It helps."
Eliot did not laugh for the next five hours.
The pain came in long dark waves that took the room apart and put it together wrong.
He held onto August's wrist so hard that the bones creaked.
"Breathe," August said. "With me. In. Out."
