Divorced for Being Barren, I Came Back Pregnant by His Rival novel · Chapter 5 of 24

Chapter 5: Lobby

Grayson was in the lobby by nine the next morning, and he had brought two lawyers.

Eliot saw him from the mezzanine, through the glass rail, before he saw himself.

The navy suit.

The slicked-back hair.

The gold pin Eugenia had given him on his thirtieth birthday.

Forty VanDusen employees stood in the lobby with their coffees, in lines at the turnstiles, and every one of them was staring.

"I'm here to collect my husband's property," Grayson said to the desk guard, loud enough for the stone ceiling. "Eliot Standish. He's been taken in by this company."

"Ex-husband," Eliot said.

He came down the stairs in his lab coat, with the VanDusen badge on a lanyard and his hands in his pockets.

Grayson turned.

For one second his face was nothing but surprise, and under it something that looked a lot like fear.

Then it was gone, and he smiled the pleasant smile he used on investors.

"Eliot. Thank God. Mother's been worried sick."

"Has she."

"You took something from the house. A box, some old papers. It's company property, and we'd like it back before this becomes unpleasant."

Eliot waited for the old pull in his chest.

The one that used to bend him toward Grayson in any room.

There was nothing.

Grayson smelled of his expensive cologne and, underneath, something flat and sour.

It did not move him at all.

He thought of cedar and smoke, and his thighs tightened under the lab coat, and he put the thought away.

"The notebooks are mine," he said. "They were mine before I met your mother, they were dated before the wedding, and the prenup you waved at me on Friday says anything I brought into the marriage stays with me."

"They contain trade secrets of Auchincloss Biotech."

"They contain my handwriting."

The lawyers shifted.

One of them was whispering in Grayson's ear, and Grayson shook him off.
