Chapter 14: The Second File

Georgina's POV

The old woman across from our burned house opened her door in a quilted robe with the cat on her shoulder.

It was nine at night, and she looked at Winslow and then at me.

"You brought him," she said.

"I did."

"He's the one who offered me a fence."

"That wasn't me," Winslow said. "That was my foreman, and I didn't know."

"You pay him."

"I do."

"Then it was you." She stepped back from the door. "Wipe your feet."

He wiped them.

I had never seen Winslow Wentworth take an order from anyone.

We sat at her kitchen table under a yellow lamp, and she brought the tablet and a plate of shortbread nobody touched.

Winslow sat on my right.

I noticed it because he had never once done it in four years.

He had always walked on my left and sat on my left, and I had always turned my head to find him.

Tonight he had gone around the table without a word and taken the chair on the side where I could hear him.

I didn't thank him, because I was still furious.

"You've watched the first part," the old woman said. "The car and the can."

"Yes."

"The camera goes to sleep when nothing moves. Then the fire lit up the street and it woke again at 1:38. That's a second file." She tapped the screen. "It has sound. The first one didn't, because the motion sensor is a cheap thing."

"I didn't know there was a second file."

"You didn't ask, dear. You asked about the can."

She pressed play and turned the volume up.

The picture was our lawn at night, orange and jumping.

The front door stood open with smoke pouring out of it.

I leaned toward the speaker on my good side.

Lorna came out first, with Winslow holding her arm.

I heard her voice, thin and clear and frightened.
