Chapter 18: The Interview Room

Winslow's POV

I turned around, and my mother saw what I had hidden from her for thirty-five days.

The shirt hung open in two halves from the knife.

Under it the old burn ran from my shoulder to my belt, and the new cut ran across it, and both were bleeding.

My mother put her hand over her mouth.

"That isn't from tonight," she said.

"No."

"What happened to you?"

I couldn't answer.

Georgina answered for me, from the other side of the table, in a voice that carried.

"He hid it because he thought you'd take her side," she said. "Look at his back, Eleanor. Now tell him he was wrong."

The cousin by the sideboard gasped.

My mother looked at Georgina, and then at me, and then at the empty chair where Lorna had been sitting.

Then she sat down heavily at the head of her table.

An ambulance took me to Maine Medical.

My mother rode in the front.

Georgina went to Bea's for June, because I asked her to, and she looked at me for a long moment before she agreed.

In a curtained bay a doctor stitched the new cut and cleaned the old burn.

He said, in a hard voice, that I should have been in a clinic weeks ago, and I said Georgina had already told me so.

My mother sat on the plastic chair with her pearls in her fist and did not speak.

When the doctor left she said, "I told that girl she was fragile."

"Mother."

"I said it at the courthouse in front of the judge. She had been on a stretcher. She had burns on her arm. And you had burns on your back and neither of you said."
