Chapter 5: The Left Side

My hearing aid burned with everything else in the house, and I needed a new one by Monday.

I can get through a quiet room without it.

I cannot get through a courtroom, a lawyer's mouth turned away from me and a judge who mumbles.

So on Friday morning I took June to the audiologist's office on Exchange Street.

The receptionist looked up my name and smiled.

"Mrs. Wentworth! Your order's ready."

"I haven't ordered anything."

"It was placed the day after the fire. The same model you had, with the better battery. It's all paid."

"Who paid?"

She turned her screen to me.

The account holder was Wentworth Building.

I felt my face go hot.

"Cancel it," I said.

"It's already made. It's nonrefundable."

"Then I won't take it."

"Ma'am, it's the exact fit for your right ear. They sent your old mould from the file."

"Then keep it for someone who wants a favour from my husband."

I asked what the cheapest aid in the building was.

It was nine hundred dollars and it whistled in wind.

I paid it out of my own savings, the six thousand four hundred dollars Winslow had never known about, because I'd kept it for a rainy day and the whole sky had fallen in.

The audiologist fitted it and told me to come back if it hurt.

I walked out into the cold with June on my chest and the little device squealing in my right ear.

The street sounded louder and flatter.

I stopped on the top step and tried to remember which way the curb was.

A hand closed on my left shoulder blade and pulled me back.

A cyclist went past so close the wind caught my braid.

I hadn't heard him at all.

"Georgina," said Winslow, right behind me.
