DM Me When You Land novel · Chapter 6 of 6
Chapter 6: Sober
Pachas woke at nine with a dry mouth, a sore jaw, and a head like a tired bell.
The comedown had arrived on schedule.
The edges of the world were flat and a little gray, and his legs felt as if he'd run a marathon in work boots.
He lay still and took inventory.
The ceiling fan.
A stranger's snore through the wall.
A curly head on his chest, a warm hand curled loosely over his ribs.
Every shiny thing from last night was gone.
What was left was the weight of Apollo against him, and it was heavier and truer than anything the capsule had given him.
He thought, with a clarity that had nothing to do with chemistry, I'm in trouble.
Apollo stirred.
He blinked up, glasses off, hair flattened on one side.
His eyes were red-rimmed and tired.
For a second Pachas saw him remember, saw the whole night land in his face, and saw the fear start to rise.
"Good morning," Pachas said.
"Hi."
"Water."
"You're bossy."
"Yes. Drink."
Apollo took the bottle, and drank half of it with his eyes closed.
He set it down and stared at the ceiling.
"I feel," he said carefully, "like I got hit by a guagua."
"A what?"
"A bus. A Cuban bus. They're famous for it."
"Venezuelans say autobús, like civilized people."
"You say autobús and you're dead inside."
