Valeria's POV

In the first week of March, at thirty-eight weeks exactly, the obstetrician took off her half-moon glasses and told me I could stand up.

I walked to Rhys's kitchen, in my socks, and announced to the room that I was free.

Rhys was making eggs.

Jody was on the new recliner he had bought her, with her feet up and a mug of tea, supervising.

"I would like to eat standing," I said. "I would like to stand next to the stove and stand while I eat, and then I would like to stand in the bathroom."

"You're glowing," Jody said. "Possibly with rage."

"Seven weeks, Jody."

"I know. I counted them with you."

I took a step toward the stove.

Something inside me went pop.

I looked down.

A warm, steady stream was running down both legs onto Rhys's kitchen floor.

"Oh," I said.

The spatula hit the tile.

"Rhys," I said, calmly. "I have just stood up for the first time in seven weeks, and my water has broken."

"Okay," he said. "Okay." His voice came out an octave too high. "Okay. Where's the bag? Where's the bag, where are my keys, where's my..."

"They're in your hand," Jody said.
