Chapter 14: The Rail
Torin was on his knees in the front hall when I let myself in.
He wore only black trousers, and around his throat was a collar I had never seen.
It was old steel-grey leather, worn pale at the edges, with a plain iron ring at the front.
"I kept it in a shoebox," he said. "I haven't had it on since I was thirty-two."
"Whose collar was it?"
"Mine. I bought it for the woman who said I knelt like a man paying a bill."
"And you want me to put it on you."
"I want you to decide."
I looked at him for a long time.
He had shaved the beard shorter.
He held absolutely still, with his hands on his thighs and his eyes on the floor tile.
I took the buckle in my fingers and pulled it one notch tighter than he had it.
His breath went out of him.
"Now," I said. "Teach."
He taught me in his own hall, and it was the cruelest, best lesson I ever had.
He had dug a camp lantern out of the garage and hung it from the coat hook by the door.
"That's the door," he said. "Inside it, a rail."
He nodded at the banister of the stairs, an oak bar at the height of my hip.
"The lantern bearer stands at the Rail. It's always a hooded man or woman, always silent. They lift the lantern to your face."
"And I say my name."
"Your name and your sub's.
You put your right hand flat on the Rail, and you say, Bronwyn Renwick, Domme, with my sub.
That hand is the only passport."
I put my hand on the oak.
"Bronwyn Renwick, Domme, with my sub."
"Again. Lower. You're asking permission."
"Bronwyn Renwick," I said, lower, "Domme, with my sub."
