Chapter 22: The Fall
Nobody moved.
Thirty men and women stood in the headlights with crowbars in their hands.
The revolver in the doorway held them all as still as stone.
"Gus," Torin said.
"Come inside, my boy."
"No."
He said it quietly, and I felt it go through the crowd.
Torin's hands were open at his sides.
The blood from his lip had dried black on his chin.
"I looked away from her once," he said. "I'm not going to do it again. You'll have to watch me."
"Torin," I said.
He turned his head a quarter inch.
"Ma'am?"
My voice came out cold and clear.
"Walk."
He started up the stairs.
One step, and then the next.
His shoes rang on the stone, and he did not take his eyes off the gun.
"Stop," Gus said.
Torin climbed.
"I taught you to hold a room," Gus said, and his voice thinned. "I taught you everything."
"You did. Here's the lesson."
Near the top of the stairs, Gus fired.
The flash lit the whole front of the house.
The report slapped across the lawn, and a woman in the crowd screamed.
Torin staggered.
He clapped a hand to his left arm, where a dark patch was spreading in the torn sleeve, and I think I screamed his name.
He kept climbing.
Gus's face went slack.
He lifted the gun for a second shot, and his hand shook so badly that the barrel jerked wide.
Torin took the last step and caught him by the wrist.
He twisted.
The revolver rang on the stone and skittered down the stairs, and the foreman put his boot on it.
"That's for Ember," Torin said, and took Gus by the collar of his shirt.
For a moment I thought he would throw him down the steps.
Then he looked at me, over Gus's shoulder.
