Chapter 7: The Floor

"A Domme earns the Lantern door one way," Billie said. "She runs a witnessed scene on the open floor, start to finish, and I sign the card."

She held up a small white card with a line at the bottom.

It was the second Friday after that first night, two weeks before the Lantern, and the Carbarn was full.

Eighty people stood in a loose ring around the little square of stage we'd been given.

I had on black leather pants, my boots, and a corset I'd bought on Tuesday.

My hair was slicked back, and my lipstick was the darkest I owned.

I had never been so frightened in my life.

Torin stood beside me in jeans and nothing else.

His chest was bare and his hands hung loose.

He gave me one look, steady and unhurried, and then he turned and walked up the three steps onto the stage.

"Your sub is ready," Billie said into the sudden quiet. "Whenever you are, ma'am."

I climbed up after him.

My boots were loud on the boards.

I stopped in the center, steadying my breathing the way he'd taught me.

Then I said, "Kneel."

It filled the barn.

He went down on both knees at once, with his head high.

A murmur went through the crowd.

I walked a slow circle around him.

I let the heel of my boot tap the floor near his hand.

"Hands behind your back," I said. "Eyes on the floor. You'll look up when I let you."

"Yes, ma'am."

"You've been a bad man this week."

His shoulders twitched.

"You gave orders in a boardroom. You told people what they could and couldn't do. You didn't like not being told no."

"No, ma'am."

"That's going to change."

I crouched in front of him and ran a gloved hand down his chest, slowly, over every rib.

Then I stood and unbuckled his belt.

I did it deliberately, a click at a time, loud in the silence.
