Chapter 25: All Night
I ran down the stairs in my T-shirt and shorts and out onto Passyunk.
The heat hit me first, then the smoke.
Black smoke was rolling out of the salon's top windows, where Annette slept.
The front glass had gone, and her pink dryer chairs were melting in orange light.
"Annette!"
"Here! Here, I'm here!"
She was on the curb across the street in a pajama top and her fiancé's boxers.
He was in his boxers too, holding her by both arms so she couldn't run back in.
I got to her and grabbed her face.
"Are you hurt?"
"No. No, we got out the back." She was shaking all over. "Giada. The gown."
Then the trucks came around the corner from Tasker, and it was her fiancé's own firehouse.
Three of the guys who'd reglazed my window jumped off the back in their gear.
One of them looked at her fiancé in his boxers and said, "Go put pants on, you're embarrassing the company."
Annette laughed, and then she was sobbing into my shoulder.
I'd never once seen her cry.
I held her head against my neck the way she'd held mine on Christmas Eve.
