Chapter 28: First Date
Nobody on Passyunk made a sound.
Not the band, not the families, not the eight men holding the Madonna on their shoulders.
Mauro stood on the church steps and waited for me to say something.
He didn't come down.
He didn't reach for me.
He just stood up there in front of everybody and let me decide.
I climbed three steps, so we were nearly eye to eye.
"Then ask me something," I said.
He breathed out.
"Will you have dinner with me? Tomorrow. A first date."
"We were married six years."
"I know. I'm asking for the first date."
Somewhere behind me Annette said, "Oh my God, say yes, my feet hurt."
"Yes," I said.
The street went up.
The bald man from Wilmington looked at Mauro with his hat in his hands.
"And the vote?"
"Vote however you want," Mauro said. "I've got a procession to walk."
He walked it with Mrs. Zito on his arm, in front of the Madonna, at her pace, all the way to Tasker.
I watched from the curb outside the bakery.
At eight the next morning Gabriella texted from the number with no name.
