Chapter 30: Annette's Wedding
I set my cup down on the counter.
"Because of me?"
"Don't flatter yourself," he said, and almost smiled.
Then he didn't.
"Because Dom stepped in front of a bullet with an egg sandwich in his hand. Because my father traded you for a chair. Because a man threw a brick through your mother's window to get at me."
"So it's because of me."
"It's because I don't want anybody stepping in front of anything for me again." He turned the cup in his hands. "The families can pick a man. They can have Delaware Avenue. I'll keep Ma's rent."
"And then what do you do?"
"I don't know." He said it like it was the first time he'd ever said those words, and maybe it was. "Something my father didn't hand me."
I looked at him in my kitchen, in his shirt, with no watch on.
"You can bead," I said.
"Badly."
"You've gotten better. I stopped picking your rows out in May."
He put his cup down very slowly.
