Chapter 31: Fall
He reached under the pillow and took out two things.
A long white envelope with a state seal in the corner.
And a sheet of graph paper, folded small and soft from his pocket.
He gave me the envelope first.
I knew that envelope.
He'd opened one just like it on a ladder in June.
I opened this one.
"The review board dismissed the complaint," I read. "Certification restored, effective immediately."
I looked up.
"Deke. You got it back."
"Two weeks ago."
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"Because I'm not going back to it." He took a breath. "That's the scary part. Open the other one."
I unfolded the graph paper.
It was a drawing in careful pencil, with a ruler.
The two brick pits, side by side.
Around them, a long low building with a tin roof and wide doors that rolled open on the river side.

PLATES.
Across the top it said PIT HOUSE.
"I've got some money saved," he said. "Not fourteen million. Enough for tin and lumber and a good concrete floor. I want to build this. With you. And I want to stay."
