Chapter 19: The Social Club
I didn't scream.
I put the phone face down on the counter and went back up the stairs.
Leandro was rinsing his cup at the sink.
He took one look at my face and dried his hands.
"Show me."
I showed him.
He looked at the picture for a long time. A muscle moved in his jaw. The cup in his other hand creaked.
"I'll go," he said.
"No. We'll go. Both of us. And we're bringing him out."
"The doctors said another three days."
"The doctors don't have Davide Spada standing outside the door."
At ten-thirty I signed my father out of the hospital against medical advice.
Papa sat up in bed with his bandaged face and said, "Finally. The coffee here is a crime."
Leandro carried him down to the car. Papa protested the whole way, in two languages, holding tight around his neck.
Leandro drove us to Bensonhurst, to a narrow brick row house with a Madonna in the front yard and plastic covers on the sofa.
Nonna Iannone was waiting in the doorway with a pot of soup.
She looked at Papa's face.
