Chapter 32: One Long Table
I handed the baby to Papa.
I sat down at my mother's table in my slip, with my hair in pins, and opened it.
Something small and hard slid out of the envelope first and rolled across the table.
Papa put his hand down flat and stopped it before it went over the edge.
My wedding ring.
The first one. The one I dropped in the soup.
It was clean now. Somebody had scrubbed every bit of the setting.
The letter was one page, in square capitals, pressed hard into the paper.
NOEMI.
MY MOTHER TOLD ME THE DATE. I WANTED THIS TO COME BEFORE, NOT AFTER, SO IT WOULDN'T FOLLOW YOU INTO YOUR NEW LIFE.
I FISHED THIS OUT OF THE SOUP THAT NIGHT. I'VE HAD IT IN MY POCKET EVERY DAY SINCE, UNTIL THEY TOOK MY POCKETS.
IT ISN'T MINE TO KEEP. SELL IT. PUT IT TOWARD HER SCHOOL.
I STOOD IN THE RAIN FOR THREE DAYS TO GET YOU. I SHOULD HAVE STOOD THERE EVERY DAY AFTER.
I DIDN'T. THAT'S ALL OF IT.
BE HAPPY. HE'D BETTER BE GOOD TO YOU.
