Chapter 13: The Heir's Rifle

"Step away from him," the Heir said again.

The rifle did not move.

Ansel stepped in front of Thora and spread his arms.

"Put it down," he said.

"You left the camp with no weapon," the Heir said. "You left your boots tracks in the mud, and they lead here."

"I came on my own."

"You came to her. She has been in your head for two days."

"No," Ansel said. "She's been out of it. That's the difference."

The Heir's eyes slid to Thora over Ansel's shoulder.

"What did you give him?"

"Water," Thora said.

She took the full vial from her sleeve and held it up in the thin light.

"This is what Stella gives you at dawn. I tasted it. It's a conditioning drug from the world I came from. It teaches you to love whoever hands you the cup."

"Lies," the Heir said.

His voice was flat, but the barrel dipped the width of a finger.

"Ansel stopped drinking it yesterday morning," Thora said. "By the afternoon he knew my name. Ask him what he remembers."

"I remember you at the dinner table," Ansel said. "Nobody passed you the salt."

The Heir said nothing.

Then the wind turned in the ravine and came down the black wall from behind Thora, carrying her scent straight to him.

His whole body locked.

The rifle shook once, hard, and the muzzle went to the mud.

"What is that?" he said, and for the first time his voice cracked.
