Chapter 18: Lance's Last Move
Rory held out a coffee.
"Dane takes his black," he said. "You take yours with too much sugar. I checked in week one."
I took the cup.
His hand was perfectly steady, and he looked me in the eye.
"Morning, Anneliese," he said, and he went out the front door with his keys, whistling the fight song.
It was the kindest thing anyone had done to me in a month, and I stood in the hall with my chest aching.
At two that afternoon I was behind the bakery counter with flour on my forearms.
The lunch rush was over, and four students sat at the back tables with their laptops, one of them a girl in a gray hood by the window, with her face turned away.
The bell over the door rang, and Lance came in alone.
He wore a gray hoodie with the hood down, and no Herons jacket, and he looked tired.
I had known that face since I was six.
"Annie," he said.
"We have lemon scones," I said. "That's what I can offer."
"I'm not here to buy anything."
"Then you're here to take up space."
He put both hands on the counter, and I saw they were shaking.
"Lacey ended it Friday night," he said. "After the rally. She said I was a liability."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"No, you're not."
"No," I said. "I'm not."
He laughed in a wet, ugly way and wiped his eyes with his sleeve.
"She's been leaking stuff," he said. "To the team chat, to the club account. I think she's got more. She keeps saying 'Saturday' and smiling. I wanted to warn you."
