Chapter 5: Lance's Party

I went to Lance's birthday party for one reason, and it was in Lacey's back pocket.

"You don't have to go in alone," Rory said on Friday night, on the porch of the blue house, in a clean shirt and a very good mood. "I'll be your decoy."

"My what?"

"Your date. Fake one. We walk in together, I'm louder than the gossip, and everyone looks at me instead. They like looking at me anyway."

"You're enjoying this."

"Anneliese, I have been waiting my whole life for someone to need a decoy."

I laughed, and it was the first time since Saturday.

He offered me his arm, and I took it.

Lance lived in a rented house two blocks from campus with a porch full of red cups.

Rory pushed the front door open with his shoulder.

"Hello, everyone," he announced. "This is my girlfriend, Anneliese. We've been dating three days, and she's out of my league."

A few people laughed.

A lot more of them turned to stare, and the music seemed to get louder to cover it.

I kept my chin up and walked through the living room on Rory's arm.

I saw the guys from the football team near the kitchen.

I saw the girl from the dining hall with her phone already out.

I saw Lance at the far end of the room, in a paper crown somebody had given him, with a cup in his hand.

Then the people near the front stopped talking.

Dane had come in.

He wore a plain black shirt and held a cup of water, and I had been told by three different people that he never went to parties.
