Chapter 14: Rush Street

The north stairwell on Rush Street smelled of rain on oil, exactly as it had five years ago.

Bram stood one landing below me with his hands in his coat pockets.

It was Wednesday, a quarter to seven, and the light through the grating was going gray.

His chief waited in the car on the street and had not said a word to either of us.

"Third level," Bram said. "You know where."

"I know."

I walked to the rail and put my right hand on it.

The metal was cold, and my palm fit the place without searching.

"This is where I stood," I said.

"I know that too."

"The sedan was there."

I pointed through the doorway at an empty slot forty feet away.

"He came out of the elevator with a paper bag in his left arm and his keys in his right."

My voice shook, and I let it.

"I didn't see his face, Bram. I saw a coat."

He said nothing.

I took the nine-millimeter from my bag.

I held it out to him by the barrel, with the grip toward his hand.

"It's the same stairwell," I said. "I'm not going to run, and I'm not going to fight you."
