Chapter 13: The Closet
"The closet," Tabitha whispered. "Now."
She grabbed the banker's box off the desk and shoved it into my arms.
I stumbled across my father's study, folded myself between his old winter coats, and pulled the door to a crack.
Tabitha snapped off the desk lamp.
Then she turned it back on, because a dark study was worse than a lit one.
The front door opened and shut downstairs.
Heels crossed the hall, quick and light, and climbed the stairs.
"Tabitha?"
Gwen's voice came up the staircase.
"In here, Mama."
My stepmother stood in the study doorway in a camel coat with her pearls still on.
Through the gap I saw her whole face.
She looked at Tabitha, and then at the room, and then at the desk, one slow sweep.
"The neighbor's camera sent me a picture," she said. "A woman in a long coat, walking up my path at ten forty."
"That was Lillian."
My heart stopped.
"She turned up crying," Tabitha said, and her voice was perfectly bored. "She wanted Daddy's watch. I told her the safe is none of her business and I sent her down the hill. She was gone ten minutes before you pulled in."
