Chapter 19: The Guard
The motel stood on Route 40 behind a tire shop, and half its sign was dark.
The landlord waited in the lot with three men and an unlit cigarette.
"Room nine," he said. "He's been here since March. Dalton stopped paying him when you walked out of Calder Ridge."
"How did you find him?"
"His sister cuts hair." The landlord shrugged. "Everybody's sister cuts hair."
I looked at Katie in her green velvet, with a coat over it.
"You don't have to go in."
"I do," she said. "I'm the one with the lab report."
Room nine smelled of fried food and cheap soap.
He sat on the edge of the bed with his boots on.
He was thinner than I remembered, and his jaw had healed crooked, a little to the left.
When he saw me his hands began to shake.
"I don't want trouble," he said. The words came out slurred around the bad jaw.
"You've got it," said the landlord from the doorway. "Tell him what you told me."
The guard looked at Katie.
