Chapter 20: Veto
Nobody spoke.
The page lay on the white tablecloth with a pen beside it.
Lyle Voigt looked down at Emmett with an expression I can only describe as patient.
"The note is called," he said. "The board is present. I need only the witness of the room."
"Mr. Voigt," a voice said.
It came from Table Four.
Greta Voigt stood up.
She wore a long green dress and no coat, and her braid was pinned up in a crown.
The man she loved stood beside her, and he did not let go of her hand.
For a moment her father didn't seem to understand what he was seeing.
"Greta," he said. "Sit down."
"No, Dad."
"This is not the place."
"It's exactly the place."
She walked to the head table.
The ballroom parted for her, one round table at a time, until she stood between her father's board and her father's lawyer, beside the empty chair.
She put a hand on the back of it.
"Section nine of the Voigt Spirits shareholder agreement," she said. "Written by my mother, Anneliese Voigt, in the spring before she died."
Lyle's face did not move.
"A loan above ten million dollars may be called, accelerated or enforced only with the consent of the shareholder block that approved it, spoken aloud in the presence of the board."
The lawyer started to speak.
"I'm not finished," Greta said, and her voice rang across the room. "That block is mine. Forty percent. My consent was given in writing three years ago. I am withdrawing it."
"You can't," said the lawyer.
"Read the clause."
He read it.
His lips moved.
His face went from pink to gray.
"Spoken aloud," Greta said, "in the presence of the board. Mr. Voigt called the note in the presence of the board. I am the block, and I am here. I do not consent. I do not consent now, and I will not consent to any call on that note, to any sale or to any acceleration, for as long as I own a share of my mother's company."
