Chapter 18: Unarmed
On Sunday morning I took the bus to the East Side and rang the bell at the iron gate.
Tito opened the front door before the bodyguard could.
He held up the back of his hand. The ink was mostly gone, but he'd traced PANCAKES over it in orange crayon.
"You came," he said.
"It's in writing."
Valerio wasn't there.
Paola said he'd left at seven. He'd said he'd be back at noon.
"He doesn't want to make you look at him," she said, cracking eggs. "His words."
"Good."
"Liar," Paola said, not unkindly.
Tito flipped six pancakes and dropped two.
We ate them off the stove anyway. Evidence.
At eleven fifty I kissed him on the head and left.
At noon, from the bus window, I saw Valerio's car turn in at the gate.
I needed a car of my own.
There was exactly one in the world with my name anywhere near it.
A blue Honda, ten years old, that I'd driven from New Hampshire to Yale and from Yale to my wedding.
Whitman had moved it onto the firm's car lease the first year. "Kittering men don't pay for their own gas."
