Chapter 20: The Parking Lot
I was trying to remember the number for a cab when a black car turned the corner.
It pulled up at the curb, right on the square of dry pavement.
The back window came down.
Tito was in his booster seat in his navy suit, holding a piece of orange paper with both hands.
"We brought you luck," he said.
The paper said GOOD LUK JO-JO in crayon. There was a frog in a crown.
I looked at the front seat.
Valerio was behind the wheel.
No driver. Nobody in the passenger seat.
It was a Tuesday.
He hadn't driven himself on a Tuesday in two years.
"Where's your car?" he said.
I held up my phone so he could read Whitman's text.
He read it.
His hands tightened on the wheel until the leather creaked.
"Nobody dies," I said. "Drive."
He leaned across and opened the passenger door.
I got in.
He drove like a man carrying something that might spill. Every light, every turn, two hands on the wheel.
Tito talked the whole way.
"Do you know all the answers?"
