Chapter 23: Law, Not Blood
"The reason for all of it," I said. "What did he mean?"
Whitman's father turned his hat around in his hands.
"He said if you'd stayed quiet, nobody would have looked at the trust. He said you went on the stand and the whole firm started counting."
"I didn't take the money."
"I know that." He looked at the broom, the counter, the license on the wall. "I'm asking you what I should do."
"You already know what to do. You told him Friday."
"Friday gives him four days."
"Four days to do what?"
He didn't answer.
"Report it in the morning," I said. "The bank, the disciplinary counsel, the attorney general. Nine o'clock. Not Friday."
"He's my son."
"That's why it has to be you."
He stood in my doorway for a long time.
Then he put his hat on and nodded once, the way he used to nod at the end of a closing.
"Nine o'clock," he said, and went out into the street.
I called Valerio before the door finished closing.
