Chapter 30: Two Kitchens
The wedding was set for the last Saturday in November.
That gave the two families nineteen days to fight about food.
On Monday the aunts came to the house with a list.
Four aunts at the long table, the one in purple at the head of it, as if Valerio weren't in the room.
"Sunday gravy," she said. "Braciole. Meatballs the size of a fist. Our mother's recipe."
"For two hundred people?" I said.
"For three hundred. People bring people."
On Tuesday Fiorella came to the house with a list.
She stood at the other end of the long table in her black dress and read it out.
"Bread from my ovens. Cookies from my ovens. The cake from my ovens. Seven tiers."
"Seven?" said Paola.
"One for every year I was wrong about him," Fiorella said. "Two were enough. The other five are for the guests."
On Wednesday they were both there at once.
The aunts at one end of the table. Fiorella and her nephew at the other.
Tito sat in the middle in his suit, eating a cookie from one side and a meatball from the other.
"A wedding from my church," Fiorella said, "is fed from my kitchen."
