Chapter 12: The Price
My father was already seated at the head of the dining room table when we came down at seven.
He wore a gray cardigan, and a glass of white wine sat at his elbow.
Donald Philbrook was fifty-eight, with a silver crew cut and a face weathered by forty years on the water.
He rose when I came in.
He did not hug me.
He looked at my face for a long moment and said, "Susannah."
"Dad," I said.
"You're thin."
"I'm a nurse," I said. "We don't eat."
His mouth moved, almost a smile.
Then he turned his pale blue eyes on the man behind me, and looked up, a long way up.
"Torsten Seavey," he said. "Ned's oldest."
"Sir." Torsten put out his hand, and it disappeared into my father's. "Thank you for having us."
"Sit down, son. The walls in this house are thin, as I expect you've noticed."
Torsten went red from his collar to his hairline.
I stared at the tablecloth.
My father pulled out my chair himself, which he had not done since I was nine, and I sat.
