Chapter 8: The Green Chair
Torsten's POV
My mother knocked on my own front door on Sunday with a tuna casserole.
I knew before she opened her mouth that she had come to end my marriage.
She stood on the porch step in her church dress with the dish held out in both hands.
She had never once brought me food unless she wanted something.
"Torsten," she said. "May I come in?"
"Susannah's asleep upstairs," I said. "She worked all night."
"I'll be quiet."
She was not quiet.
She walked into my kitchen and set the casserole on the table.
She looked at the dropped magnets on the floor, and the torn buttons I had left in a saucer, and her mouth thinned.
"Your father is very hurt," she said.
"I expect so."
"The girl has no people. Wyatt checked."
She counted it off on her fingers.
"A mother who passed, and a father nobody can find, and she works nights in a hospital."
She lowered her hand.
"Whatever she told you, Torsten, you don't know what she is."
"Her name is Susannah," I said.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Her name is Susannah, Ma."
I kept my voice level, because I was a foot taller than my mother and had never once used it on her.
"You'll say it in my house, or you'll say nothing in it."
She stared at me.
"Your father says the marriage can be set aside," she said. "A man can do it quietly, in the first month."
"Does he," I said.
"He'll make it worth your while," she said. "You keep the shop. You keep your name on the wharf."
