Chapter 20: The King's Offer
I came up out of the Vault with my mouth still swollen and my hair coming down.
The court saw it.
I let them.
The throne room was full, the way it had been on the morning I dragged the chain across the floor.
The cuff with my name on it lay on a cushion on the steps of the dais now.
Nobody had moved it in three days.
The King sat above it in his crown.
Phaedon stood at his right hand in fresh white, his wrist bound in linen and held a little against his chest.
He smiled at my mouth.
"I see you said goodbye," he said.
"I said see you soon."
The King lifted his hand, and the room quieted.
He looked older than he had at my Selection.
There were shadows under his eyes.
"Lady Nysa," he said.
"If my brother is found guilty at the Feast, I'll strip him myself."
"I know, my King."
"I'll put him through the Gate of Clouds with my own hands."
