Chapter 31: Thames Street
"Days only," I said.
"Days only. Monday to Friday. Home for dinner." The office manager lowered her voice. "Your father turned it down twice, you know. He said he couldn't leave the boat."
I looked out the wheelhouse window at the harbor going gold.
At the paper crabs.
At the man asleep in my father's chair.
"I'll be there at nine," I said.
I took it.
I said yes in the old man's office with a paper crab still in my jacket pocket.
The fleet captain's office was on the second floor of the company building, with a window that looked straight down on the Resolute's berth.
There was a new steel desk in it.
On my first Monday, the steel desk was gone.
In its place was a scarred oak one with a coffee ring burned into the corner.
My father's desk.
He'd done his logs at it for thirty years in the crew room downstairs.
After he died, the company put it in the basement.
The office manager stood in the doorway with her arms crossed.
"Took four of the dock guys," she said. "Don't ask me to move it again."
