Chapter 23: The Pen

The chapel went completely silent.

Gilt lowered his bleeding hand from the altar.

"No," he said. "You cannot. The vow is already made."

"You made me promise never to tell him the ending," I said. "That vow stands. I am keeping it."

I held up the chewed pen so the whole house could see it.

"I'm not going to tell him how it ends. I'm going to give him the pen."

I turned to Rook. He stood at the foot of the altar with his bare hands open.

My knees were not entirely steady.

"Rook Harrow," I said. "This is my vow."

"From this moment the story is yours. What you write about yourself, about me and about this house happens exactly as you write it."

"I will not tell you the ending. You will write it, and I will keep whatever you choose."

"There is no end date on it."

Behind me, someone gasped. It sounded like the moth.

For the longest moment, Rook did not speak.

His gray eyes went over my face, my hair, and the pen in my hand.

"You wrote me nine years ago," he said slowly. "You gave me a house and a curse and a glove, and you decided every sentence. And now you hand me the pen."

"I do."

"Why?"

"Because you are the one who stood there," I said. "It's your story, and I've been telling it wrong since I was twenty-two."

"Page forty called it too soft."

"Page forty was a coward," I said. "So was I."

Loretta made a small noise in her throat, and I heard the nurse sniff beside her.
