Chapter 18: The Mug

Dev came into the kitchen at eight the next morning with a poster under one arm and the Hush mug in his other hand.

He unrolled the poster on the table and held down the corners with the sugar bowl, the toast plate and Finn's phone.

It was a black hood, a pair of fists and one word in red letters.

"I want you to sign it," Dev said.

"Dev."

"I had it above my bed for six months. Nobody gets to sign my Hush poster but Hush."

I took the marker he held out and signed it with my left hand.

HUSH, I wrote, and under it, in smaller letters, I'm sorry about the potatoes.

Dev read it twice. He rolled the poster up carefully and tucked it under his arm.

"I'm putting it back on the ceiling," he said. "Facing down."

Finn pulled out a chair. He had a spiral notebook in front of him, the kind bookies use, and a pencil behind his ear.

"Since we're all here," Finn said, "I'd like to settle accounts."

"We're not settling accounts," Dad said.

"I have eleven open bets on this family, and nine of them involve Birdie." Finn opened the notebook. "I need to know which ones are still live."

"Which ones are live?" Cal asked.

"The big one is mine. The day Stahl announced Eight Gyms Night, I put a thousand dollars on Hush at three to one."

Everyone at the table stopped chewing.

"You bet a thousand dollars against your brother," Dad said.

"I bet a thousand on the best left hand in Philadelphia." Finn looked at me. "I just didn't know whose it was. I'm up three thousand if she wins, and if she loses I get to say I was loyal to the wrong person."
