Chapter 13: The Day After Tomorrow
The Alder Pass volunteer fire hall smelled like diesel and coffee.
It was ten in the morning on the twenty-sixth, and I had been out of the hospital for forty minutes.
June was still upstairs in the NICU with her orange hat on. The charge nurse had promised to call me the second her oxygen changed.
Eli had driven me straight here.
Fifteen volunteers stood around a folding table in the truck bay, all in work boots, and not one of them was making small talk.
"They know," Eli said quietly. "Word travels."
A man in a Carhartt jacket pushed a paper plate of cornbread across the table toward me.
"My wife made it," he said. "She says eat."
"Thank you."
"She says if Joyce Garver sends anybody to your door, call us before you call the sheriff."
"Why not the sheriff?"
He just looked at me.
A woman came in from the office with a thick folder and a bad limp.
She was around sixty, with grey hair cut short and reading glasses on a cord.
"I'm the lawyer," she said. "Eli called me yesterday afternoon, and I haven't been to bed."
"I can't pay you much," I said.
"The squad pulled my husband out of the Narrows in 2011. We'll talk about the bill when I'm dead." She sat down across from me. "Rhonda sent me everything. The petition, the letter, the texts, the voicemail. Tell me what's wrong with it."
"The doctor never met me."
"Good. What else?"
"Neil signed it on the twenty-second, and he didn't read it."
"Better. A signature is a signature, but a father who says he was lied to is a different witness." She tapped the table. "The magistrate is the problem."
