Chapter 9: The Lobby
On Sunday morning, before nine, the building lobby was packed.
The doorman had opened the glass doors.
Behind the counter, three neighbors with their hair in rollers had gathered, along with a man and his dog.
There were also two boys with a ball and the lady from the second floor carrying a bag of bread.
Everyone pretended to be waiting for the elevator.
Nobody was waiting for the elevator.
Tatiana had planned it all out.
She’d called Brandon from her cell phone the night before, her voice warm, almost sweet.
“Brandon, it’s Tatiana. Fiorella wants to talk to you tomorrow at nine, in the lobby. Come alone. Bring your cell phone.”
He’d answered with a catlike laugh.
“I knew you’d come around.”
Now he was standing there in a freshly ironed white shirt and spotless sneakers, looking pleased with himself.
Fiorella came down the stairs in a simple blue dress, her hair tied back.
She stopped in front of him, hands clasped, in full view of everyone.
Tatiana and I stayed a few steps behind, beside the counter.
“Hi, sweetheart,” Brandon said. “I knew you’d see reason.”
