Chapter 15: The Ledger

Haskell came down the ridge road at noon in the same battered pickup, with the white shirt flying from the antenna.

He stopped fifty yards from the Yard gate and stepped out with the ledger under his arm.

Behind him, on the flatbed, the old man's wife sat with a rider's rifle against her shoulder.

By then half the Yard stood on the wall.

The other half had crowded into the gate lane, shoulder to shoulder, all of them looking at me.

I walked out alone as far as the line of the gate.

Hallie and Tova came up on either side of me, close enough that our sleeves touched.

Bria had stayed up on the east wall by the radio shack.

I had put her there because it was the safest place in the Yard.

"Nolan Greer," Haskell called.

His voice was calm and carried a long way.

"I come under a white flag. I come to settle accounts in front of the people who are owed."

"Let her go first."

"In a moment. You will want to hear this."

He opened the ledger on the hood of the truck and ran a thick finger down the page.

"Nolan Greer. Debts to the Yard. One Tax truck. One bridge, destroyed. Sixteen fuel tanks. Thirty riders' bikes. A dozen men hospitalized."
