Chapter 21: The Governor

The Governor of Las Vegas arrived at the Yard gate at noon the next day, and he came with forty trucks.

They rolled in two lines out of the east, grey and square, with steel plates bolted over their windshields and gun mounts on the roofs.

Behind them, grinding over the cracked asphalt, came two armored carriers on treads.

The Yard watched from the wall.

The whole Yard stood shoulder to shoulder in the dust with their buckets at their feet.

The Narrows stood with them, and so did the Tax who had taken off their armbands.

I stood in the gate lane.

Hallie, Bria and Tova stood with me, three cuffs glinting on three left wrists.

"He's not stopping," Bria muttered.

"He is."

The column halted a hundred yards out, all at once.

A door opened on the largest truck, a black box of a thing with a flag on the antenna.

A man climbed down.

He was tall, silver-haired, in a pressed grey suit with the jacket buttoned.

He carried no weapon.

He walked up the road on his own.

A boy in uniform trotted behind him with an umbrella, shading him from a sun that did not trouble him at all.
