Chapter 19: The King in the Square
The crack above the Arena opened.
Black light poured through it, and the crowd screamed.
Forty thousand people rose at once and fled for the tunnels.
I grabbed Emmett's hand, and we ran toward the center of the sand, the opposite way, because that is where the light was falling.
A column of black glass came down out of the sky and struck the ground in front of the royal box.
It shattered.
Where it had stood, a man was standing.
Tall, pale, hollow-eyed, with a crown of black glass and a robe of ash.
Varek stretched his arms.
"Dawnreach," he said, in a voice that carried to every seat. "How I have missed you."
The knights around Rennard backed away, one step, then another.
The Queen Regent stood as still as stone.
"Do not be frightened," said the Hollow King. "I have not come to harm you. Only to see my twins."
His hollow eyes found us across the sand.
"You are late," he said. "I had expected you at the Gate."
