Nobody moved.
The wind blew across the white glass plain, and it made a low thin note in the open Gate.
"You've broken a blade," Varek said conversationally. "I've made another. It has the same temper and the same appetite. It does not mind who holds it."
"We're not using it," I said.
"Then the Gate will close on its own, with both of you outside, and the Hollow will come through unchecked."
"You said you'd keep it."
"I said I would keep the crown, my dear. Not the world."
He smiled at Emmett.
"Come, Nightwarden. You have wanted this since the cathedral. A death in the right place. A noble end."
"Shut up," Emmett said.
"I am only saying what you thought."
"I know what I thought."
I put my hand on his arm.
"Don't listen."
"I'm not."
He was looking at the blade on the pedestal.
