Chapter 5: Between the Shelves
The Inter-American Library occupies four floors of red brick at the back of campus.
The Latin American literature section is on the third floor, in a long aisle of metal shelves that almost no one visits.
I went there Wednesday to look for an edition of One Hundred Years of Solitude that I needed for my paper.
I went there, I admit, to hide from Bruno, too.
I’d been avoiding him for two days: in the hallways, in the dining hall, in the café.
The rumor about my blouse being buttoned wrong had already reached Calidonia.
I walked down the aisle, running my finger along the spines, looking for G.
At the far end, beside a dusty window, someone had left a book cart.
I heard footsteps.
I turned.
Teodoro stepped into the aisle with a book tucked under his arm and his hair still damp, then stopped dead when he saw me.
