Chapter 10: What He Said
The old mill stood at the bottom of a wooded hollow, and Linnea heard it before she saw it.
Six men waited inside, and every one of them was thinking about the cart.
Theron reined in at the top of the hill.
"I count a fire in the yard and no more," he said.
"Six men," Linnea said. "Three inside by the door, two on the roof beam, one with the women in the cart."
He turned his head slowly.
"How do you know that?"
"You already know how."
He held her gaze for a moment, and then he nodded once.
"Tell me where they'll move."
She shut her eyes and listened.
The thoughts came up through the trees, flat and bored and tense.
If the commander comes down the road, shoot the horse first.
"The two on the beam have crossbows," she said. "They're waiting for you to ride in by the road. If we go down through the creek, they'll be looking the wrong way."
"The creek is waist deep."
"Then we'll be wet."
They left the horses tied in the trees and went down through the freezing water on foot.
Theron went first, with his sword drawn and no sound at all.
She followed with a knife from his belt.
At the edge of the yard she touched his sleeve and held up three fingers, then pointed at the door.
He went in low and fast.
The fight was short and ugly.
Two men dropped from the beam when she shouted that the crossbows were turning.
One came for her with a pitchfork, and she stepped inside the swing and put the knife into his thigh.
Theron finished the other three.
When it was done, he stood in the middle of the yard with blood on his sleeve and breathing hard.
