Chapter 19: The Rope
I was out the door before anyone in the hall finished turning around.
Tobin was right behind me.
The cat was where I'd left it, at the foot of the front steps, with frost on the glass.
I hit the starter, and it caught on the first try.
"Two lifts," Tobin said, swinging up beside me. "The lower chair, then the Crown chair. Twenty-five minutes, top to bottom, for the first of them."
"The cat track's straight."
"The cat track's steep."
"I built this cat for steep."
I drove out of the parking lot past fifty black trucks and onto the cat track, and I didn't slow down.
The track climbed the side of the mountain in hard switchbacks.
My father had cut this road.
I'd groomed it a thousand nights.
Above us, the lower chair carried a string of bright jackets up into the gray light.
Kids waving their poles, and mothers filming it.
"Faster," Tobin said quietly.
I gave it everything.
The rebuilt engine screamed, and the tracks bit, and the cab tilted until my coffee mug flew off the dash.
At the top of the cat track there was the old patrol cache, a plywood box beside the Crown chair's top station.
