Chapter 17: The House Feed
That night my mother held court at her kitchen table with a legal pad, a heating pad and a plate of toast.
She had asked for four chairs.
The fourth held an old engineer Abel had called in, a friend from his road days.
He was sixty, bald and soft-spoken, and he had taught Abel everything he knew about a console.
He had come in the back door with a canvas bag and a pencil behind each ear.
"I'm not going to give you my name for the pad," he said. "I'm going to give you my badge."
He laid a lanyard on the table.
It read: Rhinestone Radio Honors, Stage Left, Audio.
"I took the gig in September," he said. "I run stage-left audio for the show. Dax thinks I'm just another hired hand. I let him believe it."
"You're a spy," Donna said, with deep satisfaction.
"I'm a technician with a grudge, Miss Donna."
Abel sat at the end of the table with his big hands folded, saying very little.
"Here's what I know," the engineer said. "The Honors broadcast runs two feeds. The in-ear mix goes to the artist, and the house feed goes to the arena and the truck. Gil has the truck."
"And Dax's backing track plays from where?" I said.
"A laptop at front of house. Gil's guy runs it. The lead vocal, Abel's voice, is its own stem. It goes to the house speakers and to Dax's ears both."
"So Dax mimes to a track and listens to Abel in his earpiece to stay in time," I said.
"Right. And if you pulled the track, he'd have nothing to hide behind."
