Chapter 10: Sold Out in Nine Minutes
Jude was in the studio at seven the next morning with two coffees on the mixing board.
He did not mention the car.
I did not either.
"Dax's lawyers sent a cease-and-desist at midnight," he said, and pushed a coffee toward me. "It says you may not perform, record or discuss Paper Sparrow in public."
"He can't stop me singing my own song."
"He can try to make it expensive."
"Can I?" I asked. "Sing it?"
"Yes. His claim on the song is a name on a registration form. Yours is a tape with a postmark, and a judge who watched you write a bridge." He took a sip. "But if you sing it on any stage I own, his lawyers will name my label in the suit."
"Then I won't use your stage."
"I was hoping you'd say that."
He slid a sheet of paper across the board.
A venue floor plan, with a small circle in red ink.
"There's a hall across the street from the arena," he said. "Eight hundred seats. Old, ugly, a good room. It's free the same night as the duet tour."
"The same night."
"Same hour. Doors open when theirs do."
I stared at him.
"You want me to book a show against Dax Kingsley's opening night, with three weeks' notice, with no band and no label."
"You have a band," Tilda said from the door.
She came in with her headphones around her neck and a box of donuts.
"The drummer from the party called me last night. So did the guitarist. So did the bass player, who cried, by the way."
"They'll work for free?"
"They said they'd work for you."
I looked at the floor plan again.
I could not breathe properly.
